INTRODUCTION
KATIE L. RANES is an associate with the law and mediation firm of
Kimberly Stamatelos & Associates, where she maintains a general
practice including, but not limited to, family law and estate planning.
Katie received her B.A., with honors, from Roanoke College in Salem,
Virginia, in 2004, and her J.D., with high honors, from Drake University
Law School in 2007. Katie is a member of the American Bar Association,
the Iowa Bar Association, and the Polk County Bar Association. Katie
was admitted to practice law by the Iowa Bar Association in 2007.
MORE ABOUT KATIE
Raised in a small town in southern Iowa located near Lake Rathbun,
Katie decided at eight years old to be an attorney and has never
looked back. Encouraged by her friends and family, Katie had completed
her college degree and decided to tackle law school by age 20. In
law school, Katie achieved recognition for her outstanding academic
performance. During her first year of law school, Katie and her
writing partner were honored with the professor’s highest
grade on the year’s biggest writing project – the appellate
brief. She was also honored with multiple CALI awards, meaning she’d
received each law professor’s highest honor, in banking law,
insurance law, and federal estate and gift tax. She also received
A+ marks on her final examinations in three classes: will drafting
for the general practitioner, banking law, and insurance law.
Katie genuinely loves the practice of law. When she finds a spare
minute, Katie also enjoys spending time with her husband (her high
school sweetheart) and their adorable daughter. An avid reader of
historical romance novels, Katie has been known to disappear for
whole days wrapped up in a book. Katie is also an experienced “cruiser”
and loves escaping to the Caribbean, where she pretends for a few
days that there is nothing more to life than floating along in the
ocean, eating chocolate buffets, sleeping until noon, sunning all
day, gambling all night, and reading her beloved novels.
Katie and her husband live in Des Moines, where they enjoy experimenting
with old family recipes, watching their daughter grow each day,
and renovating their 1939 Beaverdale home.

If Katie ever decides to give up the practice of law, it will be
to … write a romance novel, of course! Her favorite authors
include Kathleen Woodiwiss (a legend in the historical romance novel
circle), Lisa Kleypas, Amanda Quick, and Julia Quinn.
